FAQ

Answering your frequently asked questions

1. What is "fore-edge painting"?

A fore-edge painting is an image painted on the unbound edges of a book visible when the pages of the book are fanned. It also can refer to an image that is visible on the closed edge of a book. References also refer to the paintings as disappearing or secret images, and they are often hidden beneath gilded edges.

2. How does the paint not seep onto the pages?

The book press or clamps create enough pressure so you're not allowing water and paint to go far onto the pages. The surface then becomes like regular paper where you can paint. A sanded surface is more ideal so it is smoother.

3. What does "double sealed" mean?

I use 2 kinds of sealants. I first go over the images with Krylon Matte Finish fixative spray (which is meant for watercolor paintings). After 2+ hours, I then go in with Jacquard Dorland's Wax Medium. Dorland's wax is a waterproofing protective topcoat for watercolors, gouache, acrylics, oils and more. It helps with moisture and finger oils.

4. That seems tedious, why paint the edges when you can buy sprayed edges or make your own?

Fore-edge painting (especially hidden fore-edge painting) is an endangered art. I wanted to bring life into it again and bring awareness to this unique art form. It is also one-of-a-kind. The images may be replicated, but not exactly. No two paintings are ever the same.

With sprayed edges being popular, why not have something more unique? They are beautiful and I love looking at them when I go to bookstores, however I would rather have something more unique and different that no one else has.

4. Why do I require a non-refundable deposit before you start?

The typical standard for artists is a 50% deposit before starting.  If I create your custom work and you decide you're not happy with it, I have just spent countless hours on something that is specific for you. Just like anything, I need to be paid for the work I do. You'll get rough sketches before I start and occasional progress photos before the final product is delivered to you.
